Responding to the “Challenge to Change” theme of the then International President, Mahenrda Amarasuriya, Phil initiated the process which led to the formation of the Helen Keller Internet Lions Club – the first such Club in the Multiple District, with a long term ambition to draw members from amongst individuals in the community who would find it difficult to be a member of a ‘traditional’ Lions Club.
Young Leaders in Service – previously a simple youth programme, Phil has recognised the capacity within this programme for not only recognising Young People through the Service they undertake, but also the capacity of rpublicity and membership.
It is often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and there are a number of examples where Phil’s lead has been imitated by others. Take for example the development of international humanitarian projects or the setting up of an “internet” or “parliamentary” Club. Phil has had the vision to move the Association of Lions Clubs International forward, not only by helping those in need but also by giving other individuals the opportunity “to Serve” their communities.
